Original dark green cloth with stamped titles and lovely front depiction of sword play stamped in gilt on the front. All edges gilt. Bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Minimal shelf handling wear. Minor puckering of the cloth on lower rear corner of volume 2. Bookplate of William Henry Bond. 12mo; 7.25 inches tall; ix, 303; v, 319 pages. Printed by Ballantyne Press. Illustrated throughout, with sixty plates over both volumes by Chris Hammond. Background Information: George Saintsbury was an English writer, literary historian, scholar and critic; the most influential English literary historian and critic of the early 20th century. His lively style and wide knowledge helped make his works both popular and authoritative. These two volumes are a selection of the original epistolary text, supported by summaries by Saintsbury of the letters he has omitted from the text. These letters are taken from The History of Sir Charles Grandison by Samuel Richardson. It is an epistolary novel written by Richardson, first published in 1753. It was written in response to Henry Fielding’s The History of Tom Jones which parodied the morals presented in Richardson’s previous novels.
