John Dunning (1942–2023) was an American writer renowned for his detective fiction, particularly the Cliff Janeway series. Dunning moved to Denver in 1964. Before becoming a full-time writer, he worked in various fields, including as a stable hand at a horse racing track and as a reporter for The Denver Post. In 1984, he and his wife, Helen, opened the Old Algonquin Bookstore in Denver, specializing in rare and used books—a venture that directly influenced his writing.

Dunning’s experience in the book trade and journalism provided rich material for his novels. His protagonist, Cliff Janeway, is a former Denver homicide detective turned rare book dealer, navigating the complexities of both crime and the rare book world. The series is celebrated for its authentic portrayal of the book industry and its intricate mysteries.
