The St Cuthbert Gospel: A Book Buried With a Saint

In 698 AD, monks buried the body of Saint Cuthbert with a small red leather book the world was never meant to see again.

It was a pocket-sized Gospel of John—bound in tooled leather, stitched by hand, placed in the tomb as an offering.

For centuries it lay sealed in silence. When the tomb was reopened in 1104, the book was still there—its binding intact, its pages untouched.

It passed through monasteries, survived Viking raids, reformation, and war. In 2012, it was acquired by the British Library for £9 million.

Today, it remains the oldest intact European book. A sacred object buried with a saint, and carried through history by reverence alone.
